Local walking track set to get Tumbarumba community members activeLast modified: November 4, 2008 - 10:43 AM
Community members in the Tumbarumba area can look forward to improving their health in a project recently commenced between the Riverina Division of General Practice & Primary Health and Tumbarumba Shire Council. As part of the Town Tracks Project, community walking tracks will be created in eight local government areas throughout the Riverina, including Tumbarumba. According to Riverina Division of General Practice & Primary Health CEO Nancye Piercy, the Town Tracks project aims to encourage the Tumbarumba community to increase their levels of physical activity and improve their health. “The Town Tracks project aims to identify, assess and establish safe walking routes that are accessible to all members of the community, to promote and encourage an increase in participation in physical activity,” said Mrs Piercy. “Funding for the project has been provided by the Department of Health & Ageing, as part of the Healthy Active Australia Community Grants Program, and will involve building on the pedestrian access plans of Tumbarumba Shire Council to create clear and safe walking routes in the township of Tumbarumba." “Exercise needs to be safe, accessible and affordable and walking is particularly helpful in this regards. As a community we need to encourage people to be more active.” According to Tumbarumba Shire Council Mayor George Martin, Council is looking forward to working with the Division to build a more active community. “Town Tracks allows council to invest in infrastructure that will have a positive and sustainable impact on the community,” Councillor Martin said. “When the tracks are established they will be an excellent health resource for members of the community, including community groups, mothers and children, school children, the elderly and others, encouraging increased physical activity at zero cost,” said Councillor Martin. The Town Tracks Project is currently underway and will be launched in 2009.
