Rail Trail Consultation about to start

Last modified: September 18, 2008 - 5:04 PM

Tumbarumba Shire Council has taken another step towards establishing the Tumbarumba Rail Trail.

Council and the Rail Trail Advisory Committee are now in a position to speak to landowners whose properties directly adjoin the track, or who may have the track traverse their property.

Over the next month or so, committee members will meet with landholders to hear their concerns, as well as gauging positive outcomes of the proposed trail.

Council’s Community and Economic Development Officer Chris Blake said that the committee is deliberately on a listening brief, so the trail’s ultimate design can be tailored to best accommodate those most affected, and where possible on an individual basis.

“The committee will then be in a better position to suggest possible ways of overcoming any potential problems identified, based on experience with Rail Trails in other States and even from overseas,” Mr Blake said. “However, no final decision on the trail’s ultimate design will be made until consultation is completed and individual needs taken into consideration.

“Already, some indicate that they would like to keep the corridor fenced while others prefer that this not happen, some prefer to keep the grazing access, others would like to see trees planted,” Mr Blake said.

During consultation with affected landowners, Council hopes that a detailed survey can be undertaken to pinpoint exact areas of need. This data will guide likely works needed, and allow costs to be more accurately determined.

“While the initial aim is to establish the walking, cycling and horse-riding track from the Old Tumbarumba Railway Station to the Pioneer Women’s Hut Museum at Glenroy, this consultation will occur with effected landowners all the way to the Shire boundary near the Downfall Road,” Mr Blake said.

Contact will be made with all landholders in coming weeks to organise agreeable times for consultation.

Anyone wanting further information is urged to contact the Shire Office.
